Pests that are Good for the World but not Your House!

When it comes to pests, you probably never think much about them other than “how the heck am I going to get these pests out of my house!” We understand all too well how pests can be annoying to deal with and even cause damage to our property; that’s why we are in the pest control business! However, we are aware that some pests can actually be helpful for the ecosystem outside of our homes and create a balance in the natural world.

Here are some of the pests that you may encounter in or around your home that actually do their part in contributing to a healthy world outside of your property.

EARWIGS

When you look at an earwig, you probably won’t see how beneficial they are to the world because they are weird looking creatures who have a bad reputation about burrowing into peoples ears. Earwigs actually don’t go near our ears, despite the old wives’ tales say how they like to make their way to our brains to lay their eggs.

Earwigs are mostly found in gardens because they like to eat the roots and harmful garden pests. Earwigs are great for keeping your garden clean because they will eat mites, aphids, decaying matter, insect eggs, and other bad material. This is a natural recycling process that keeps your soil healthy! So the next time you see an earwig in your garden, don’t cover your ears and run away, trust that they are doing their job in keeping your garden safe!

BATS

An average, a bat will eat enough insects to match their body weight every single night. When you think about how much insects weight compared to bats, you will see that they eat a lot of bugs each night! A small bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes an hour, so multiply that by every bat in the world to see how important they are at lowering the mosquito and insect population. Would you rather have a few bats flying around or millions of mosquitoes feasting on your body? If you hate scratching mosquito bites as much as we do, the answer is obvious!

BEES

You have probably heard it already, but bees are essential to our ecosystem. The unfortunate part is that the bee population is lowering every year and we need to help the population grow because without them, life as we know it would change forever. As drastic as that sounds, it’s true! Bees are responsible for pollinating over 300 million flowers a day and over a third of all food we eat relies on bees pollinating them.

As we mentioned above, some insects are great for our earth and controlling the insect population, but that is only when they are outside of our homes. If you notice your home becoming infested with insects this spring, give Gilpin’s Pest Control to stop the infestation at the source! We service Vancouver and the surrounding area and we can help control any type of infestation including cockroaches, bed bugs, carpenter ants, miceratswasps, and so much more!
