How to Prevent Bedbugs

We’ve all heard the phrase “sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite” but have you ever had to actually deal with a bedbug problem? Anyone who has will most likely tell you it’s nothing to be cute or funny about. If you’ve been lucky enough to avoid bedbugs in your life thus far, well….congratulations! In order to keep it that way, here are some helpful tips for preventing a bed bug problem.

Use Protective Covers

One of the best steps you can take to prevent a bed bug infestation is to place protective plastic covers over your mattress and box spring. Bed bugs are very tiny, meaning they can easily hide in the small nooks and crannies of a mattress or box spring. If they are spending most of their time in hiding, it’ll be very difficult to get rid of them. Another advantage of using covers is that when searching for bed bugs, it will be much easier to spot them along the surface of the cover than on your mattress or box spring with their countless hiding spots. This is going to be very handy if you suspect a bed bug problem and want to confirm your suspicion with an inspection.

Keep up with your Vacuuming

Keeping your bedroom carpets clean with regular vacuuming is another thing you can do to reduce your chances of a bed bug infestation. A dirty carpet surrounding your bed is basically a welcome mat for bed bugs. By vacuuming your bedroom at least once a week, you can greatly reduce your chances of attracting bed bugs. If you have already discovered and confirmed a bed bug infestation, then try to increase your vacuuming to once a day. If you find that you are contributing to a dirty carpet by constantly eating in your bedroom or being messier than you rightfully should be, try to change these habits as well.

De-clutter your Bedroom

Getting rid of unnecessary clutter in your bedroom is a good way to reduce your chances of getting bed bugs because it gives them less places to hide. A tidier room that is free of clutter is going to make it much easier to avoid a bed bug infestation. The closer any clutter is to your bed, the higher the chances of having some unwanted sleeping partners.

Install Door Sweeps or Door Jams

If you live in close proximity to other homes, such as in an apartment building, it may be a good idea to install a door sweep or a door jam to block the gap under your front door. This is going to give bed bugs a much harder time if they try to enter your home. While you’re at it, make sure to search for any other gaps or cracks in your home’s walls and ceilings and have them sealed and repaired.

Follow these simple tips and you’ll be sure to avoid bed bugs and continue that bed bug-free hot streak for plenty more years to come!
