Dealing with Spring Pests
Spring is a time of rebirth. The sun starts shining, the flowers start blooming and the pests start crawling. When the spring months roll around, you need to take special precautions to deal with pests.
Wasps use the spring months to build up their nests. Go around the exterior of your home and look for places that wasps could build nests. Keep in mind that they only need a small piece of real estate to start building. Seal up cracks and make sure they cannot get in between your siding or insulation.
Carpenter ants thrive in the spring. These critters are more than a nuisance. They can actually destroy your home by burrowing into the wood. You can avoid carpenter ants by getting rid of all sources of moisture. Moisture causes wood to rot, which makes it easier for carpenter ants to do some damage. You should also keep firewood away from your house and keep your trees and shrubs trimmed.
Fleas also like to get around in the spring. If you have pets, you need to use a topical or oral flea treatment to keep the fleas away. You should also comb through your pet’s hair regularly to make sure he is not bringing any fleas into your home from the outdoors.
You also need to worry about bed bugs during the spring months. People tend to travel a lot in the spring. Bed bugs are hitchhikers, so they hop into suitcases or on clothes and come back home with people. If you stay in a hotel, use the luggage rack. Also, wash your clothes in hot water as soon as you get home.
Spring is much more enjoyable without any pests around. If you do not want to invite the neighborhood pests over for your first springtime picnic, take some precautions so you can have some fun this spring.
