ABOUT CARPENTER ANTS
Carpenter ants may begin to appear in homes as early as January and continue until October. Carpenter ants are black and vary in size. Carpenter ants are the largest ant found in the Lower Mainland. Depending on the age of the colony, winged carpenter ants may appear at any time from January to May. The winged ants are reproductive swarmers, which lay the eggs for the colony.
Carpenter ants do not actually eat the wood, unlike termites, but excavate the wood to live in. Carpenter ant colonies may number in the thousands and may cause considerable damage to the home structure. Carpenter ant colonies may be large or establish satellite colonies in the same structure.
